The GDR Retold: Black Perspectives on East Berlin – Bicycle Tour

What was life like for Black people in the GDR? Which stories are still missing from the official narrative today?

Discover East Berlin from a perspective that is often overlooked in traditional GDR tours. On this two-hour bike tour, we’ll explore the history of the GDR together from Black and Afro-German perspectives, between Alexanderplatz and the East Side Gallery.

We visit places where Black people lived, worked, protested, and built community. Along the way, we discuss contract labor, international solidarity, everyday racism, resistance, and the experiences of Black people in a state that saw itself as anti-fascist. The tour combines historical context with personal stories and shows how the realities of Black life have helped shape the history of Berlin and the GDR.

This tour invites you to see familiar places in a new light, to question common narratives, and to explore history from a decolonial perspective. Whether you’re rediscovering Berlin, interested in history, or looking to expand your knowledge of the GDR, this tour offers surprising insights and engaging conversations.
