Tufekci’s work examines how digital technologies influence politics and collective action, focusing on the structural differences between modern networked movements and earlier forms of activism. In her analysis, she compares digitally networked movements with earlier historical examples such as the civil rights movement in the United States and major uprisings of the early 2010s.

The book explains how digital communication has fundamentally changed the structure of political movements. Instead of relying on long-term organizational development, many modern movements can now grow rapidly through online networks that enable information to be disseminated instantly.

This enables movements to mobilize large crowds in a very short time, often without central leadership or formal institutions. However, Tufekci argues that this speed often comes at a cost, since traditional movements have built up internal leadership structures, shared strategies, and long-term planning over extended periods of time, which has enabled them to maintain pressure and adapt to political challenges.

In contrast, digitally driven movements may struggle to maintain their direction once the initial momentum wanes, as the same decentralized structure that enables rapid growth can also make coordination more difficult in later stages. With platforms shaped by algorithmic systems, visibility is no longer determined exclusively by relevance or significance, but by engagement metrics such as clicks, shares, comments, and watch time.

This means that what people see is heavily influenced by what generates reactions, rather than what is most significant politically. Digital platforms are not neutral spaces, as they are designed around systems that maximize user engagement, which often amplifies emotionally charged, controversial, or highly shareable content. This influences how political information is disseminated and how movements present themselves to the public, since simple, emotional, or visually striking content often performs better than detailed explanations or longer analyses.

Over time, this can shift the focus of activism toward simplified forms of communication that prioritize reach over depth.

This structure also creates inequalities in participation, as people without regular access to technology, a stable internet connection, or sufficient digital literacy are often excluded from online movements or have less visibility within them. Modern political communication is increasingly influenced by automated systems and algorithmic recommendation systems that determine which content is amplified and which remains less visible. These systems can unintentionally amplify certain narratives and suppress others, often without users understanding how these decisions are made.

This raises questions about manipulation and influence, particularly during elections, protests, or periods of political instability, when public opinion is especially sensitive to information flows. In Europe, and particularly in Germany, institutions have begun to respond to these challenges with educational programs and policy measures aimed at promoting digital literacy, in order to help citizens critically evaluate digital information and better understand how digital systems shape perception.

At the same time, journalists and researchers continue to examine how these systems influence public opinion, democratic participation, and the long-term stability of political discourse.

As a result, digital activism today exists in a constant tension between empowerment and dependence, since while it offers powerful tools for mobilization and visibility, it is at the same time heavily reliant on technological infrastructures that individuals neither control nor fully understand.

Conclusion

The relationship between social media and collective action is complex and cannot be reduced to simple positive or negative assessments. Movements can grow very quickly in digital environments, but often struggle to maintain direction, coherence, and long-term impact once the initial visibility fades. One of the key insights from this perspective is that speed does not guarantee success; while digital platforms enable movements to reach a large audience quickly, sustainable political change often
